Hearing Children hear in Malawi
Malawi has a population of over 21 million. In 2010 there were no audiologists, no formal hearing services and hearing aid provision. Hearing loss is an enormous problem due to poor primary health, malaria, HIV, Meningitis, ototoxic drugs, problems in childbirth and more.
In 2010 Peter and Rebecca Bartlett moved to Malawi to begin an EARS Inc project and stayed there till 2016. Today they continue to oversee and regularly visit the EARS Inc project which now encompasses the ABC Hearing Clinic which provides services in the capital city and throughout regional areas of the country.
The project also has a fully accredited 4-year audiology degree program which trains local Malawians to become audiologists. The government of Malawi has recently employed some of these graduates as the first audiologists in government hospitals.
People with hearing loss are having their lives changed, improving communication, education, relationships and the future of those with hearing loss for good, as a result of training local people and providing these services.
